Check out this poem written by Traci Alexis (Bespoked Stanzas) sometime ago; although it is untitled, it perfectly reflects the essence of our recent shoot for our Spring ’11 collection debut.  Please stay tuned…everything will soon be revealed.

Hello Dreamers!

I hope you all are having an inspiring, inspirational and creative day! How exciting is The heardemsay™ Project that I posted the other day?  I can not wait to see what all you creatives come up with. Today has been quite inspirational for me. I have been playing the heardemsay™ campaign video on repeat all morning and afternoon. Despite working on the video and being a part of the concept- still- every time I play it I get amped up all over again, like I’ve never seen it before. When the music hits every creative fiber in my body feels like it starts irrupting – my ideas start churning and I begin to feel like I can do anything- especially everything that people tell me I can’t do.

I think that we all can relate to the #iheardemsay™ campaign. At some point someone in all of our lives has been bold enough to tell us that our dreams can not be accomplished- that our boundless hopes are bigger than anything we could ever tackle. Oh, but how wrong they always are. If we believe that our dreams can happen there is nothing we can not do.

When we first started developing the #iheardemsay™ campaign I started to think of what my “i heardemsay”  was. I am a writer. Since I can remember I have encountered many people who have tried to steer me off of my literary path. One incident that stands out to me most was a high school english teacher of mine who told me that my vocabulary was not big enough. To express my “i heardemsay” I wrote a poem:

i heardemsay

that my vocabulary wasn’t big enough

I told them, well I want to be a writer

They told me, maybe you should find something else to love

I heardemsay I couldn’t master the english language

I told them, I want to be  poet

The next Maya Angelou-

the female Langston Hughes

with the creativity of Baldwin and the complexity of Morrison

They told me, that was something I simply couldn’t do

But they- were only a few

who didn’t understand all that I can do

I was the only one who could dictate what I could do

I heardemsay I could never be a writer

look how little they knew.

What is your “i heardemsay” dreamers? Send in your short stories, poems, drawings of all the things people told you couldn’t do and how you are defying the naysayers to info@heardemsay.com!

Until next time…and until then keep dreaming!

Last night I watched Dave Chappelle’s Block Party and I almost forgot how much I really LOVE that movie.  It was the most refreshing feeling to relive the moment when I first saw the movie in the theater (2005) and how inspired I was when I left;  just seeing the commodore amongst my favorite artists and how they shared the common goal of making #goodmusic was inspiration within itself.  Since the majority of the setting (the movie) takes place in Brooklyn I figured I’d use this post to share my experience in Brooklyn while I was on my New York vacation.  Prior to my visit, my knowledge of Brooklyn did not exceed The Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z (both of their birth places) and once again I was unaware of the rich culture the city comprised; Brooklyn offered so much more than what is generally portrayed in the media (Marcy Projects, etc.) and I am glad to be able to share another side.

First stop was The Brooklyn Circus where I felt right at home; the BKc family was extremely inviting and they also showed heardemsay™ love!

Founder, Ouigi Theodore applies heardemsay™ buttons to store entrance display.

Second stop was Mile End Delicatessen for lunch where I got the “smoked meat” sandwich with frites!

And the third and final stop was The Brooklyn Museum where I visited the Andy Warhol: The Last Decade exhibit.  It was really interesting to know that during this time (the last decade of his life) Warhol produced more works, in a considerable number of series and on a vastly larger scale, than at any other point in his forty-year career.  Now that’s what I call dedication!

All in all, Brooklyn became my ideal home away from home!

Today is a very special day for my partner in crime Traci Alexis; after months of contemplating on starting a blog, she finally decides to launch Bespoked Stanzas, and she has not turned back since…and today marks her 100th post!!!  I know this may not seem like a big deal to most, but trust me it takes so much dedication and discipline to even reach 10 post (if you are a blogger, you know what I am talking about), so I applaud her for following her dreams.  With that been said keep following the pursuit because so many great things are in store for heardemsay™ and Bespoked Stanzas…soon everything will be revealed.

heardemsay™ x Bespoked Stanzas collaboration coming soon.

Today I woke up early in a trance- I was rushing to  get ready for school, going through my whole routine that had been programmed and set the last five months, and half-way through being ready to walk out of the door I came to consciousness that school was over, and in my case- for GOOD.  That’s right I GRADUATED but minus the cap and gown, the long ceremony, the walk across the stage, or even the diploma…this graduation was mental.  After years of contemplating  ” to stay (in school)” or “to go (pursue my dream)”, for the first time, I made myself priority (can’t please everyone) and decided to ONLY pursue my dreams.

“I AM the master of my fate;

I AM the captain of my soul.”

Last week I experienced a drought, and my inspiration level was at an all time LOW high…and Tuesday night it was revitalized.  I attended Da Poetry Lounge, and it felt almost as if that was the missing ingredient to my stew of creativity…out of the few years I have been attending, I have never been so inspired; there was definitely some type of synergy circulating the small theatre.  One of my favorite highlights of the night comes from a good friend of mine, Youssef Grant.  His poem set the tone for a night of inspiration.

At the peak of my adolescence I memorized learned the poem Invictus in order to be able recite it for my 8th grade English final, which I happened to get an A in!!!  Although I was a pretty intellectual kid at the time, the significance of that poem exceeded the capacity of my understanding at that moment.  Just recently I revisited the poem, and to my surprise, it is so relevant to the stage I am currently experiencing right now.  Everyday I am faced with obstacles that could easily detour me from the road to success, but I have learned to adopt Henley’s proverb of being “unconquerable” to my daily life, and believe it is paying off.

Keep fighting the good fight my friends!!!  Trust me…us hard WORKERS always prevail.
